A fresh approach to process audits
Innoval Technology has developed the Audit Map, or A-Map, to provide a structured approach to process audits which makes them both repeatable and quantifiable. Furthermore, our approach removes the need for a paper-based system.
The Process
We've used the A-Map system in-house when we've audited processes for our customers. In fact, that's how it evolved. However, even if we're not involved in your audits we can still work with you to compile an A-Map to use yourselves. We'll work with you to create the structure and then we'll train your team. We'll also support loading the software onto your server or intranet.
The Software
The first level of an A-Map, like a K-Map, consists of a matrix showing process stages versus attributes. In this case the 'attributes' refer to the variable that is checked during the audit. The colour of each intersection is determined by the audit inspector and is defined as follows:
Dark blue = strong i.e. there are no problems with this attribute at this process stage
Green/blue = medium i.e. the process meets specification, but there are areas for improvement
Light blue = weak i.e. improvement urgently needed
Orange = unknown i.e. area not visited or data unavailable
Green = disputed
The A-Map gives a very powerful visual overview of the audit. You can see at a glance which process areas need improvement, as well as your areas of strength and weakness.
The Summary Level of the A-Map explains the choice of the intersection colour. It also contains an action plan.
The Detail Level of the A-Map holds the data to support the opinions given in the Summary Level.
Because the A-Map is designed to be held on the company intranet, everyone can see what needs to be improved and where. Furthermore, the information is available 24/7.
The A-Map uses a standard format which can be repeated allowing comparisons to be made between audits. The results can be quantified simply by counting the number of intersections of each colour. Therefore, it's easy to see which areas are improving.
