Automotive Lightweighting Technology

Our consultants have been providing experience-led technical support to the automotive industry for decades, so we can get you to your lightweighting goals quickly

We know all about automotive aluminium. Our team has contributed to the development and industrialisation of much of the automotive sheet technology in use today. We have been working with OEMs and sheet, casting and extrusion suppliers on automotive lightweighting technology for many years.

How we can help with your lightweighting project

Working with both OEMs and suppliers, we can assist with:

  • Alloy selection
  • Alloy performance criteria
  • Recyclability and compositional limits
  • Heat treatment options for specific properties
  • Joining technologies
  • Cleaning, pretreatment, bonding and coating systems and their compatibility with lubricants, adhesives and joining techniques
  • Corrosion issues
  • Characterisation of materials and structures
  • Testing criteria
  • Supply chain information
  • Supplier audits
  • Demand projection
  • Analysis of competitive technologies
  • Knowledge management and training

You can be confident that our knowledge is cutting-edge

We manage and participate in several automotive and aerospace collaborative material and process development projects. These projects involve automotive and aerospace OEMs, as well as suppliers and academic institutions. They are funded by the UK Government through Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
